IT’S ok – no need to SHOUT

I hear what you say.

Please, please, Simon, let’s have no more about New Year resolutions…. I mean, they are so last month.

Believe me, I get it. When I shared with the Combers tribe that I had lost my gym card, they said it was probably in the same place as my new running shoes and Learn French in Six Easy Lessons CD’s

So let’s resolve right now to have no more talk of resolutions.

Health

No matter what new year health kick is that were are guilted into at the beginning of the year our hair needs work gentle consideration all the time…..Constant daily attention yes but it’s not as difficult as an hour in the gym 3 days a week!

From winter detox to summer sunscreens, regenerating in autumn or doing a spring clean, good, strong and healthy hair should always be a priority.

There’s no point spending a lot of money on a hair cut or style or even using the best shampoo and conditioner unless your hair and scalp is constantly nourished with the correct treatments to detox and improve to a healthy condition.

When there are concerns the first conversation between our consultants and guest is diet . No, we’re not being nosy or judgemental. I like a double giant cheeseburger with fries as much as the next gym bunny.

But we all know that what we eat has a major affect on the condition of our hair and its worth revisiting this often inconvenient truth

So, let’s look at some tips on foods that are beneficial to keeping your lovely hair glowing whatever the time of year.

NUTS:

All types of nuts are super when it comes to fighting hair thinning or hair loss. In particular, walnuts contain oils which contribute to the elastin in your hair . Walnuts also benefit hair growth because if you don not have enough oils in your body, then hair is more prone to snapping. A word of caution – too much oil or the wrong type makes hair limp and lank so don’t overdo it.

FISH:

Magnesium helps hair grow and a good source of this is fish such as halibut.

EGGS:

A popular TV ad used to say ‘Go to work on an egg.’ It’s great advice too for strong hair because Vitamin D promotes healthy hair and eggs are a super source for this vitamin.

CARROTS:

They don’t just help hair stylists to see better in the dark. Carrots are one of nature’s best healthy foods and they are also one of the cheapest you can buy. Carrots are rich in beta carotene which your body can turn into Vitamin A which produces scalp-sustaining oils that encourage hair growth and overall keeps your hair shiny and looking wonderful.

SPINACH:

OK, Popeye may have been folically challenged but that was because Brutus was always hitting him on the head. The truth is, spinach is rich in iron and iron deficiency is the second biggest cause of hair loss. It is also the most easiest to treat and a good place to start is by making sure your diet includes a healthy helping of spinach which is rich in minerals and vitamins — iron, beta carotene, folate and vitamin C.

How much hair loss per day is normal?

A good hair salon will make sure you receive the best care and advice on looking after your hair. A really good salon with well educated stylists will also remind you know that diet affects your hair perhaps much more than a stylist or any treatment can.

Doctors and health workers will also tell you that protein is an essential ingredient for great looking hair.  A single strand of hair is composed of mostly protein, which means your hair needs protein to grow.

At any given time, around 90% of your hair is actually in the growing phase. For each hair, this growing phase lasts 2 to 3 years and at the end of that time, your hair enters a resting phase that lasts about 3 months before they are shed and replaced by new hair. If your diet lacks a suitable amount of protein then you risk having a  disproportionate number of hairs going into the resting phase.

When you consider that a typical scalp has about 120,000-150,000 strands of hair on it, and sheds about 50 to 100 strands every single day then you probably won’t even notice that scale of loss. However,  if an unusually large number of hairs enter the resting phase at the same time, hair loss can become more noticeable and not just by you.

So far, I have concentrated on vegetables and nuts for good hair. But if you love your meat, don’t worry, because meat is also a super source of iron.

At Combers, we have recently teamed up with the Italian company, Davines, who are creating quite a stir worldwide with their amazing Naturaltech system whose formulas have been developed to achieve maximum benefits through their synergy with in salon head massage appointments.

Hair And Scalp Remedies

These formulas help dedicated hairdressers the opportunity to prescribe remedies for many different hair and scalp disorders from over oily scalps, including dandruff to dry scalps, psoriasis, and gentle enough for babies cradle cap. For irritated and sensitive scalps in our wellbeing range containing echinacea.   For really dry damaged hair our nourishing range with ingredients like royal jelly are prescribed. Then our plumping range gives fine and dehydrated hair the boost it so badly needs. Call and and make a free appointment with Debbie, our front of house expert.

Naturaltech is conceived as a system of products where the three elements Nature, Man and Technology merge in a union of harmony, wellbeing and effectiveness.

In ancient times, the belief was widespread that some plants had beneficial effects on the health of body and mind. In addition to fibre, vitamins and minerals, plants also contain phytoceuticals (“phytón“ meaning plant in Greek) which often have very strong colours, aromas and flavours.

The name Naturaltech was chosen to express Davines’ attention towards nature and the environment, with the awareness that technology, if correctly applied to nature, can express nature’s characteristics at their very best with full respect for the environment.

So, ask your stylist about how to keep your hair healthy all year round. And don’t forget to bring a carrot to chew on.
