Reinvent Your New Year – 2013

The Art of Reinvention

We all know that the first of January is just another day on a calendar that was invented simply to help us keep track of time. But there is something magical about the start of a new year. It’s a clean slate; a chance to begin again, to reinvent ourselves.

The old cliché keeps nagging that a change is as good as a holiday. But to be honest, change can be frightening because it means we don’t have control over the outcome. This is particularly true when it comes to hair. A fabulous new hairstyle that is a true reflection of your personality and style can make you feel brand new. But it often takes a lot of courage to make that leap, especially if you’ve had bad experiences before. It’s no comfort at all to be told, “Don’t worry, it will grow out again.” At that horrible moment, it seems more likely that you’ll grow another limb!

When your hair looks good, you feel that you can face anything the world throws at you. You often achieve more, you’re nicer to be around and you even attract better company. When you feel bad about your hair, the negative ripple effect is just as huge. So, once you are ready to take the plunge, how can you give yourself the best possible chance of sensational success?

Take it personally
My best advice take advantage of free consultations to see if a new stylist gets what you are about and the style statement you want to make. I would never expect someone to book into Combers with just anyone. Even the leading hair salon in Taunton with  the best educated stylists are not guarantees that you will connect and relate on a personal level.

Don’t bargain hunt
I also would not make my decision based on price. Knowing what it takes to become a true hair designer, I would walk away if they were asking any less than £40 for a designer and giving any less than an hour of their time. You may be surprised to hear that 20% of salons only allocate 30 minutes to consult, cut and style your hair. 74% will allocate 45 minutes. But in my opinion, any less than an hour is  not enough for true designer service. That goes for every visit, not just the first one!….So when making a decision please consider that Combers hair salon in Taunton are one of 6% of salons nationally that allocate an hour to your Cut and style service…. every time!

Take it easy
AT Combers we believe that a true hair designer will take the time to talk with you about your features (good and bad) and explain how they can help you make the most of what Mother Nature gave you. If you are not confident about making a dramatic change immediately, ask for a more subtle suggestion. A simple fringe can make a powerful change without the risk of your partner wondering who the stranger at the front door is when you get home.

Glam it up
Treating yourself to salon styling is another safe way to experiment with your hair and get to know a new stylist. The vintage inspired styles that have recently graced red carpets the world over remind us of a time when elegance and style were mandatory. You would be surprised how a great and glamorous style is, for lifting your spirits and making you feel gorgeous.

Just add colour
Colour is the most instant and dramatic change you can make to your hair. You could opt for subtle highlights in different natural blondes. Or you could tweak it up to be slightly quirky and individual with soft violets and muted mauve. Of course, you could also go for the radical colour change to Rihanna Red!

Think carefully before you choose though. A national survey revealed that hair colour is as important to women as make-up is, but that it is even more emotionally charged because it becomes a part of you – it’s not just something you can wash off at the end of the day. Women also feel a lot more vulnerable when hair colour goes wrong. But the perfect hair colour will make you feel your most confident, feminine and attractive self (whether you are covering grey or not). The key to ensuring that it does is to opt for a hair colour expert or of course the Colour Bar at Combers that specialises in hair colour.

To paraphrase that famous movie line from Coco Before Chanel, “A woman who (changes) her hair is about to change her life.” Whether you just want some minor tweaks or a complete revolution, make sure you walk into 2013 with your head held high.
