I HAVE been in the hair industry for a very long time (no jokes please)
And just when I thought I had seen it all, along comes a new product so revolutionary, it is totally transforming hairdressing and is now available first in Taunton, at Combers.
OLAPLEX™ is a hair repair treatment that is wowing both celebrity stylists and celebrity clients such as Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Jessica Biel and the Kardashians.
Top Hollywood stylists Guy Tang and Tracy Cunningham, are just two of the 7000 stylists and salons around the world who are using Olaplex – and that number if growing daily.
I am delighted that Combers is among one of the first UK salon teams asked to try it for ourselves and bring this amazing product to our guests in Somerset.
In my role, I get approached almost every week about some “miracle product” which will allegedly change the way we all think about hair. Many are just the result of hyped advertising or I am often expected to suspend my belief and ask my guests to spend months and up front investment before a result is tangibly noticeable. But I can honestly say that Olaplex is probably the most startling development in the hair and beauty business in the past thirty years.
The Holy Grail of Hair colour
In fact, hair colouring will never be the same again. Colour is better and different than ever before. You could say scientists have discovered the Holy Grail of hair colouring, and with the non ammonia formula colour I have chosen for our guests , I thought we already had the best and kindest hair colour
It all began with a discovery by two brilliant scientists in a garage in California; Dr Eric Pressly PHD in Materials and Dr Craig Hawker PHD in Chemistry.
With outside eyes and innovation
They both came from outside the world of cosmetic science which gave them out of the box thinking. It was then trialled extensively, not least on some of Hollywood’s leading actresses and artists. Jennifer Lopez was among the first to set the wheels turning after she was wowed by the results.
Firstly, the science
OLAPLEX™ is a single active ingredient, designed to reconnect the disulphide sulfur bonds that can break during chemical processes, particularly colouring or using thermal heated tools. Disulphide bonds are the bonds that give elasticity and strength to the hair. Professional hairdressers will use Olaplex as a pre-treatment or alongside colouring or lightening hair. This chemistry has never been seen before and opens up brand new possibilities in hairdressing colour variations and of course if the integrity of your hair is repairing whilst we colour your colour look better for longer. OLAPLEX™ is free of silicones, oils, aldehydes and parabens.
Celebrity stylist, Tracy Cunningham is used to clients such as Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz popping in to her salon. She introduced them all to Olaplex when it was launched in the USA December 2014, and they just loved it.
So, if I wanted to get the facts about this phenomenon, Tracy, who is also a Redken ambassador, was the one person to speak to.
In-between her hectic schedule, I caught up with Tracy when she was in London launching Redken’s new ‘Blonde Idol’ Colours, to get the lowdown on this new product storming salons worldwide – which is now available at Combers.
“Simon, if you have ever had clients who worry about their hair breaking from the colouring process, just tell them, ‘Don’t worry, I use Olaplex,’ explained Tracy.
“Not only does it help prevent breakage, my clients tell me that their hair feels stronger, silky and fuller as well. This is a brand new hair care product unlike any other, and it makes my job a heck of a lot less stressful!”
Could It Be True?
Now, I absolutely respect Tracy but part of me wondered – could it really be that good?
I should never have doubted…. Tracy added; “Simon, Olaplex could change everything.”
“It is the product that gives me the superpower to do things I never thought were possible. It allows me to colour more often, go lighter and double process the same day without any fear of breakage. Like, no breakage”

I was convinced. Tracey isn’t the only stylist who is enthusing about Olaplex. In fact, nearly every major celebrity salon in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, including Guy Tang, Nine Zero One, Estilo, Goodform, Sally Hershberger and Chris McMillan all had their army of celebrity colourists testing this “secret” formula, which from all accounts, is no longer a secret anymore.
These people are all leaders in the industry and their word counts. If they shun a product, and of course they do many times, with more to lose than most, I would shun it but when they give the thumbs up , I am in!
